The TakeCHARGE Patient Safety Campaign
Re-Launches, Marking
Patient Safety Awareness Week

5-step Patient Safety Public Awareness Campaign Returns in Pandemic’s Second Year.

WANTAGH, N.Y. – March 15, 2021 –  After a successful five months of intensive public outreach in 2020, the TakeCHARGE Campaign: 5 Steps to Safer Health Care is back this month, re-launching to coincide with Patient Safety Awareness Week 2021 (March 14-20).

As last year, the campaign — an initiative of  Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy — aims to motivate as many people as possible to take five essential steps that will help improve their chances of safe, successful medical care. The 5 Steps are:

1.    Understand & Complete Your Advance Directives
2.    Keep a Record of Your Medical History & Current Medications
3.    Prepare for Doctor Visits / Make A List of Questions
4.    Prevent Infections / Ask Caregivers to Wash Their Hands
5.    Use an Advocate / Be an Advocate for Others

The main TakeCHARGE website is www.takecharge.care, and the campaign connects with audiences via social media Facebook , Twitter, Instagram  and LinkedIn  and through a variety of Zoom events.

According to Pulse’s President, Ilene Corina, BCPA, “Especially now, when exhausted healthcare providers across the country are fighting the pandemic, it’s up to us, the patients and potential patients, to take some responsibility for our own safety while receiving care. The TakeCHARGE Campaign provides a structured five-step path for anybody to improve their health care experience.”

New this year is that the Campaign is partnering with patient safety organizations and leaders across the country and beyond. Patient safety advocates and educators from Georgia, California, Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, New England and Canada are joining the original Long Island-based team to bring the 5 Steps to a wide and growing public.
